Baccarat Basics: The Complete Beginner's Guide
Before I won millions at baccarat tables, I had to learn the fundamentals. Here's everything you need to know before you sit down at your first table.
What Is Baccarat?
Baccarat is a card game where you bet on one of three outcomes: the Player hand wins, the Banker hand wins, or it's a Tie. That's it. You don't play the cards yourself—you just bet on who wins.
What makes baccarat special is the house edge. At 1.06% on Banker bets and 1.24% on Player bets, it's one of the lowest house edge games in any casino. Compare that to slots (2-15%) or American roulette (5.26%), and you see why high rollers gravitate here.
Why High Rollers Love Baccarat
- • Lowest house edge of any table game
- • Simple rules - no complex strategy needed
- • Fast gameplay - more hands per hour
- • High limits - casinos allow massive bets
- • Social atmosphere - it's a communal experience
How the Cards Work
Cards 2-9 are worth face value. Aces are worth 1. Face cards and 10s are worth 0. The goal is to get as close to 9 as possible.
Here's the twist: if your total exceeds 9, you drop the first digit. So a 7 and 8 (totaling 15) becomes 5. A 6 and 6 (totaling 12) becomes 2.
"In baccarat, a natural 8 or 9 on the first two cards is an automatic win. No more cards are drawn. This is where the excitement peaks."
The Three Bets
1. Banker Bet (Best Odds)
The Banker bet has a 1.06% house edge—the lowest in the game. Casinos charge a 5% commission on Banker wins because this bet wins slightly more often (50.68% of the time, excluding ties).
2. Player Bet (Good Odds)
The Player bet has a 1.24% house edge with no commission. It wins 49.32% of the time (excluding ties). Slightly worse than Banker, but no commission means simpler math.
3. Tie Bet (Avoid This)
The Tie bet pays 8:1 or 9:1 depending on the casino, but has a massive 14.36% house edge. This is what casinos call a "sucker bet." It hits about 9.5% of the time, but the payout doesn't compensate for the risk.
Warning: Never Bet the Tie
The Tie bet exists to take money from tourists who don't understand the math. A 14.36% house edge means for every $100 you bet long-term, you lose $14.36. Stick to Player or Banker.
Basic Strategy
Unlike blackjack, there's no complex strategy in baccarat. The optimal play is simple:
- Bet on Banker for the lowest house edge
- Never bet Tie regardless of payout
- Manage your bankroll - set limits before you play
- Take breaks - the house edge works over time
What Makes My Approach Different
The basics I've covered here are what every gambler should know. But they won't make you a professional. What I do goes beyond basic probability—it involves pattern recognition, dealer observation, and timing that I've developed over years of play.
